Degenerative Arthritis - Drugs Effect on Joint Degeneration

Q. "I've heard that some pain relievers such as Aleve that are used for degenerative arthritis pain can actually make my joints degenerate faster.

Is this true?

Which ones should I use and which ones should I avoid?"

A. Yes, there are a number of common anti-inflammatory drugs which can interfere with the body's ability to rebuild cartilage and the joint matrix (there are some that can actually help). Over time this can cause your joints to degenerate faster than they normally would.

There have been quite a few studies which have looked at the effect that different drugs have on the various body functions involved in joint health.

Drugs that have a negative effect on joints include; Naproxen, Ibuprofen, Indomethacin, Nimezulide, Acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin), Ketoprofen, Etodolac.

Drugs which have a neutral effect on joints include; Piroxicam, Tiaprofenic Acid, Celebrex, Bextra, Vioxx.

Drugs that have a positive effect on joints Aceclofenac, Tenidap and Tolmetin.

Before the the heart & stroke issues with COX-2 inhibitors were revealed they were my preferred drug for arthritis and joint pain. They have fewer negative effects on the stomach and intestines and do not interfere with the body's joint rebuilding process.

Now we know there are additional safety concerns that should be consider. It's is important that you discuss the issues with your health care provider.
